Organic Farm

Hello, my name is Xiaoxue Li and together with my mother Conghong Chen, we grow organic leafy green vegetables in China for Nature & More. Thank you for buying our products!

Our company Beijing Organic Farm Development has high quality organic farms all over China where we grow many kinds of fruits, vegetables, root vegetables, spices, herbs and sprouts. For our farms we have selected the best locations in China near cities such as Beijing, Shanghai, Guangdong and Yunnan, where the soil is clean and fertile. It is our ambition to provide high-quality and trustworthy organic products.

On this page we would like to introduce our organic farm which is located in Guangzhou, Guangdong Province, in the south of China. At his farm we grow mostly cabbage varieties. Guangzhou is sitting on the beautiful Pearl River, adjacent to bustling Hong Kong. The climate in Guangzhou is mild, especially during winter, which makes it a good place to grow vegetables.

Interview with Xiaoxue Li

Nature & More: Xiaoxue, can you tell us something about your company?
Of course. Our company, Beijing Organic Farm Development, has selected the best locations around China to produce natural food. In China our customers can find our organic products in over 80 high quality supermarkets, such as Carrefour, Wal-mart, China Resources Vanguard, Shanghai Auchan, Pacific shopping and WuMart.

Nature & More: What organic fruit or vegetables do you produce on your farm?
Our company grows leafy vegetables such as bok-choy but also several kinds of fruits, root vegetables, spices, herbs and sprouts. Under the brand name “Organic Farm" we supply over 60 varieties of fresh vegetables, fruits and 32 kinds of grain and bean products!

Nature & More: What was the main reason for you to start with organic farming?
We are striving for a harmonious balance between production and environmental care, for the sake of planet earth and the well-being of mankind. I think consumers should choose organic in order to support organic farmers and companies. We only have one earth, therefore we should take action now.

In order to close the nutrient cycles in the cultivation process, crop wastes are used as fodder for the livestock, for example ducks and goats. The manure from this livestock, mixed with straw and cuttings, is used to make organic fertilizer for the soil. In our farm, we have a special area and equipment to make our own compost. Additionally, to prevent erosion and run-off, the land-drains and water reservoirs are well organized in our farm. We also experiment with limited tillage and no-tillage farming methods and we use green cover crops to prevent erosion and run-off.

Artenvielfalt

In our farms there are a lot of farm animals, such as cows, ducks and goats. One of the most important traditions of Chinese agriculture is the use of cattle for ploughing. In our farm we still maintain this tradition. The use of oxen means that we use less machines. For the crops, we use only organic preparations to control pests, and we focus on prevention. We limit the application of such preparations to a minimum.

We protect the surrounding wild plants, which provide habitat for insects and wild animals. We do not use any pesticides nor herbicides, so we avoid damage to natural biodiversity. There are many hedges around our farms. There are also some natural buffer zones in the farms which are a perfect habitat for both wild animals and plants.

Gesellschaft

With the development of our economy, the majority of Chinese are living a happy life. The children deserve the best from us. However children nowadays are drifting away from nature. Therefore in our farm we have a special open day for children. We want them to touch the plants, soil and animals, and let them find out how plants grow and how nature works. This way we teach them how to protect our planet and take care of it.

The best thing which we can give to our hardworking employees in return is to provide them with a nice and safe working environment. Because good food is such an important element of Chinese culture, during lunch time our farm will prepare a warm lunch for our employees. All the products which are needed for the meal are cultivated in our farm, and of course the food is freshly prepared.

We did a project to increase consumer awareness of waste recycling and environmental awareness. The campaign was called “A bottle for a plant” and that was basically what it was! The people were asked to save and bring in their PET-bottles, in exchange for a green plant. The idea behind the plant was to provide people with a little extra green in their daily lives. The project was a great success!

Klima

Compared to a conventional farm, in our farm we use less energy for inputs. Most of our greenhouses are not heated. Also, most work is done by hand, so we use less fossil fuel for machines. Ploughing is often done by oxen instead of tractors. Of course we don't spray any chemicals and we don't use artificial fertilizer, which in itself saves a lot of fossil fuel.

Our fossil fuel use is limited (See energy). Additionally the crop wastes are all collected to make compost. So any green waste will return to the soil 100%; all this helps to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and store carbon in the soil.

Wasser

In order to limit the use of water, in our farm we have set up rain water reservoirs. During the rainy season we collect rain water which we use in the dry season. For irrigation we make use of both spray & drip irrigation, while striving for minimum water use. Besides rainwater we also use underground water for irrigation, but only a small amount. The water returns to the soil, basically as clean as it arrived.
